District 4-6A, with Southlake Carroll, Euless Trinity, proving to be one of deepest in the state

Three teams from District 4-6A are undefeated entering Week 5 of the Texas high school football season.

After UIL realignment in February, District 4-5AII and District 11-6A dominated conversations about the toughest districts in the state.

The former consists of 5A area power Melissa, 2023 state semifinalist Frisco Emerson, Todd Dodge’s Lovejoy and Anna, the 2023 4A Division I state champion. The latter includes two defending state champions in Duncanville and DeSoto along with Waxahachie and 2023 regional finalists Cedar Hill and Lancaster.

But District 4-6A, home to Southlake Carroll, Euless Trinity, Trophy Club Byron Nelson, Justin Northwest and others looks like it could be included in that “toughest district” discourse. Just like in District 4-5AII and District 11-6A, it’s possible a qualified team from District 4-6A could miss the playoffs this year. That’s how deep the district is.

Carroll, Justin Northwest and Keller Timber Creek enter Week 5 with 4–0 records. Four District 4-6A teams — Carroll, Byron Nelson, Trinity and Timber Creek — appear in The Dallas Morning News’ latest 6A area rankings.

Or with:

Averaging 472 yards per game, Carroll ranks fifth among 6A area offenses and Trinity, averaging 471 yards per game, ranks sixth. Byron Nelson, with an average of 407 yards of offense per game, ranks inside the top 20.

Timber Creek quarterback Carson Porter, who faces Carroll this week, leads 6A area passers with 1,163 yards and 13 touchdowns to two interceptions. Two of Porter’s targets, Xavier Lee (30 catches for 495 yards and seven touchdowns) and Caleb Mendji (29 catches for 336 yards and three touchdowns) are among the area’s top 6A receivers.

Quarterbacks from Carroll, Byron Nelson and Trinity also rank among the area’s top 20 passers in 6A.

District 4-6A, won by Byron Nelson last year, arguably became tougher after UIL realignment with the addition of Trinity and Justin Northwest, which moved up from Class 5A Division I. Both teams made the playoffs last year.

Timber Creek, which was in 4-6A last season, also made the playoffs, but was picked by The News to finish seventh in the district after the departure of its head coach in February. Carroll was predicted to win the district and Byron Nelson was picked to finish as the runner-up. Trinity, which meets Byron Nelson this week after losing 56-48 to Carroll in Week 4, was predicted to snag 4-6A’s fourth playoff spot.

But those predictions are moot and the District 4-6A race should make for an exciting one.
