FLOWER MOUND — Denton Guyer spoiled homecoming in Flower Mound on Friday night and showed why it might be the king of District 5-6A at the end of the dance.

Guyer exerted its will on the ground with a duo of talented running backs and outlasted Flower Mound in the second half for a 44-36 victory. Sterling Schneider wore down the opposing defense with 154 rushing yards on 19 carries, and DJ Black provided the power, punching in two scores from inside the 10-yard line.

“It’s such a valuable tool, to be able to run the ball, and to be able to stop the run defensively,” Denton Guyer head coach Reed Heim said after the game. “It was very important for us tonight, to be able to start 1-0 in the district.”

Guyer (3-1, 1-0 District 5-6A) was also effective through the air, displaying the ability to beat teams in multiple ways. Quarterback Kevin Sperry spread the ball around to six different pass catchers, completing 14 of 26 passes for 275 yards. Mason White and DJ Reese both hauled in touchdowns in the back of the end zone off perfectly thrown fade balls.

“Kevin’s got a live arm, and we’ve got all these great wide receivers,” Heim said. “If we can move people off the ball up front and have success running it, then it really opens up both the run and the pass.”

Guyer wasted no time silencing the juiced-up home crowd, marching methodically down the field on the opening drive until Sperry connected with White for the game’s first touchdown.

Flower Mound (3-1, 0-1) answered with 2:15 left in the first quarter when wide receiver Carter Massey hauled in a 44-yard deep shot from quarterback Noah Spinks.

On the ensuing kickoff, a long return set up Denton Guyer at the 5 yard-line for Black’s first touchdown run, putting the Wildcats ahead 14-7. They added two more touchdowns, one by Reese and one by Black, to go up 28-7. Massey caught another touchdown for Flower Mound 14 seconds before halftime to cut the deficit in half.

In the third quarter, after Flower Mound running back Marcus Simpson’s 6-yard touchdown pulled the Jaguars within one score, Denton Guyer went back to the ground to try to finish them off. On their second drive following the break, the Wildcats ran the ball five straight times to set up an easy pitch-and-catch from Sperry to Reese, making the score 34-21 after a blocked point-after attempt. They fed Schneider on their next drive to set up a 23-yard touchdown grab by White.

Kicker Ford Stinson tacked on a 25-yard field goal for the Wildcats in the fourth quarter to make it 44-28, but the Jaguars refused to go away. On Flower Mound’s next drive, Simpson powered into the end zone again, this time from the 2-yard line, and a successful 2-point conversion made things interesting with 5:25 to go.

The Jaguars drove to the 31-yard line with under three minutes remaining in the game, but Guyer’s Jonah Shamy intercepted a flea-flicker attempt to seal the win.

Guyer, ranked seventh in The Dallas Morning News’ most recent 6A poll, will face No. 6 Coppell at home next week.

Flower Mound, ranked 17th, will travel to play Little Elm.
