LEWISVILLE — Midway through the second quarter, Coppell quarterback Edward Griffin looked doomed to be sacked. But the Baylor commit slipped free, rolled to his right and unleashed a 70-yard touchdown strike to Harry Hassmann.

It was one of six touchdown passes Griffin threw to Hassmann and his other go-to target, Rice commit Tucker Cusano, in a 55-28 win over Lewisville on Friday night at Max Goldsmith Stadium.

Griffin completed 18 of 20 passes (90%) for 460 yards for Coppell (7-0, 4-0 District 5-6A). The 6-1 quarterback was sacked four times, but whenever he was in trouble, he turned to one of his big-play wide receivers.

“Eddie G did his thing,” coach Antonio Wiley said. “He’s special when we lose him after this year. I’m telling you right now, what he does with the ball in his hand ... he’s always poised under fire.”

At one point, Griffin had 15 straight completions.

“It just goes down to trusting the system, the guys around me, the o-line protecting me up front against a great defense, and guys on the outside winning,” he said. “And I just try to get through my reads and do whatever it takes to get first downs, completions and touchdowns.”

Hassmann also had touchdown catches of 69 and 50 yards to finish with six catches for 217 yards, and Cusano had eight catches for 150 yards, including three scores of 20, 17 and 8 yards.

Hassmann has been one of the most explosive wide receivers in the Dallas area, averaging 33.1 yards per reception entering the game. The three-star recruit transferred to Coppell over the summer from New Braunfels Canyon, which is near San Antonio.

“Those corners he ran by for Lewisville were fast guys, and he ran by them and beat them by two or three yards,” Wiley said. “I mean, that’s special.”

Lewisville’s Tenel Hill, who entered the game ninth in rushing yards among 6A area players, had 77 yards and two touchdowns to help his team to a 14-0 lead before Coppell scored 34 unanswered points.

Derrick Martin tried to make it a game for Lewisville (4-3, 3-1) when he ran a 90-yard kickoff for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter, but Coppell didn’t let up. Weston Polk, a Kansas State commit, picked up a fumble and ran it back for a 62-yard touchdown with 7:10 left in the fourth quarter.

Coppell has scored at least 28 points in every game this season while having three games with over 50 points. The team was 14th in total yards per game with 432.23 entering the contest.

Coppell, the sixth-ranked team in The Dallas Morning News’ 6A poll, beat No. 14 Lewisville for the second straight season and is the lone undefeated team in District 5-6A.
