Crowley, undefeated in District 3-6A, has a lot to play for this week

A contest with North Crowley awaits in the regular season finale, but Crowley’s game against Mansfield Legacy this week is also significant.

Nationally-ranked Galena Park North Shore, the Texas football power that fell to Duncanville in last year’s 6A Division I state championship, has pretty much cruised to a 7-0 record this season.

North Shore has averaged 47 points per game and has beat all but one of its opponents by 27 points or more. Crowley, ranked 18th in the Dallas-area’s 6A poll, is the one outlier on North Shore’s schedule.

While Crowley lost 28-13 to North Shore in Week 2, it held the juggernaut to its lowest point total and point differential of the season.

“No one, in the state probably, expected that game to be competitive,” Crowley coach Carlos Lynn said. “I felt like our kids stepped up to the plate and put their best foot forward.”

After falling to North Shore, Crowley dropped its next two games: a 31-0 loss to Skyline and a 32-25 loss to Tyler Legacy. Crowley entered District 3-6A play with a 1–3 record, but has since won four straight.

Lynn said the key to Crowley’s streak has been playing consistently and winning the turnover battle, along with not letting what happened at the beginning of the year define the season.

“We could have been 4–0 in pre-district, but it still wouldn’t have gotten us a playoff berth,” Lynn said. “I would have loved to have been 4–0, but a lot of the time you learn so much about your team when things are not going well.”

Going into its game against Mansfield Legacy this week, Crowley is one of two 3-6A teams with an undefeated record in district play. North Crowley, the area’s second ranked 6A team, is the other with a 3–0 record in 3-6A.

Crowley, which finished fourth in 3-6A last season before being eliminated in the first round of the playoffs , will meet North Crowley in the regular season finale, but the contest with Legacy this week is also significant.

“Although we have punched our playoff ticket, there are some things we are definitely playing for,” Lynn said. “Trying to be the No. 1 Division II seed in our district. Trying to maintain that homefield advantage for the first round of the playoffs. And also, try to hold our position to at least play for a district championship in that last game. So there’s a lot to play for this week.”
