MANSFIELD – Mansfield Summit got 219 total yards and three touchdowns from quarterback Joseph Williams, while the defense forced four turnovers to help pace a 35-27 victory over Arlington Seguin in the District 5-5A Division II opener for both squads at Vernon Newsom Stadium on Thursday night.

Summit (2-2 overall, and 1-0 in District 5-5A Div II) never trailed in the contest, but held a slim 28-27 lead going to the final quarter. Seguin drove inside the Summit 30 with early in the fourth, but Summit forced a fumble to stop the drive.

Williams then added a 33-yard scoring run to boost the lead to 35-27 with 10:05 remaining to play. The Summit defense made sure the lead held up by getting stops on Seguin’s last two drives before running out the clock.

Tailback Amare Burgess added 103 yards rushing and two scores for Summit, while Seguin (1-3, and 0-1 in District 5-5A Div. II) got a solid contest from Texas commit JJ Johnson. Johnson scored on a 57-yard touchdown pass, later adding a 44-yard scoring interception return and a fumble recovery on defense.
