A third-down fumble recovery secured a 41-34 overtime victory for Frisco Emerson (1-0) over Hillcrest in its first-ever varsity football game on Thursday night at Franklin Stadium.

Emerson was facing a 21-7 halftime deficit after losing its fourth of five fumbles on the second-half kickoff. Yet, the defense rose to the challenge and began its comeback with an interception followed that led to an Emerson touchdown drive. That defense also stopped a fake punt attempt that led to a 57-yard touchdown run from running back Ishaqq Bills to give Emerson its first lead of the ball game with 7:45 remaining.

After Hillcrest (0-1) reclaimed the lead with just over a minute left, Emerson marched down the field to score what looked like the winning touchdown. However, Hillcrest kicker Reed Malphurs drilled a 55-yard field goal as regulation expired to send the game into overtime -- where Bills scored the winning touchdown.

Bills ended the night with 212 total yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Mike Molstad had 336 passing yards with four touchdown passes.

Hillcrest got 202 yards and two touchdowns from Jaden Hodge on the ground, but it was not enough to win the game.
