ENNIS – Ennis (3-5, 3-2 District 5-5A-2) got a 137-yard rushing performance and three touchdown passes from QB Jackson Gilkey to topple Arlington Seguin (3-5, 2-3 District 5-5A Division 2) 45-20 in a Homecoming game with postseason implications for both teams Friday night at Lion Memorial Stadium.
The winners captured their third game in the seven-contest District 5 race as playoff selections depend on the next two weekends. Ennis started the season at 0-3 and has won three of its last five games all in district play.
Gilkey helped Ennis run off 35 unanswered points after Seguin grabbed a 14-10 lead with 8:45 remaining in the first half.
The Ennis quarterback accounted for 292 of his team’s 493 yards of total offense as he helped break open the contest with a 21-point burst in the third period.
Seguin quarterback Sirawn Evans passed for 208 yards and one score, but his squad was unable to generate enough yardage to keep the contest close.
Ennis has put itself in position to contend for fourth place in District 5-5A and a possible playoff berth with two district games remaining.
The two teams hustled to five long drives resulting in four scores in the first half with no punts by either squad, and Ennis was halted on its third possession by a pass interception.
Veteran Ennis head coach Sam Harrell is seeking to get his squad into postseason activity for the 17th time in his 21 seasons over two tenures at the school.
