The year of Dallas-area schools: Argyle, Highland Park, Southlake Carroll win UIL Lone Star Cup

Argyle, Highland Park and Southlake Carroll have a reputation for consistently being some of the top athletic programs in Texas.

All three schools received further validation of that this week by winning the UIL Lone Star Cup, an award given to one school from each classification that is designed to honor comprehensive success across all sports and other extracurricular activities.

It was the first time, according to UIL records, that the winners from the largest three classifications all came from the Dallas area. Nazareth (1A), Mason (2A) and Brock (3A) also were named Lone Star Cup Champions. Each winner received a $1,000 scholarship, as well.

This award is a familiar, end-of-the-year trophy for Argyle, a school that turned from a small-town program into 4A's reigning "beast." This is the eighth straight Lone Star Cup for the Eagles and the 10th in school history. The Argyle girls basketball team won its fifth straight state championship and the baseball team won its second in a row, winning the 4A title last week in Austin.

A 10th Lone Star Cup would've been enough to tie for the most in the state across all classifications, but Highland Park raised the bar. This year's Lone Star Cup is the 11th for the Scots. The football team got the year started off right by winning its third straight state championship. Also in the fall, the tennis team won its third straight title and its 15th in the last 18 years. The girls soccer team also won its seventh soccer state championship, the most by any girls or boys soccer team in UIL history.

This is the seventh Lone Star Cup trophy for Southlake Carroll. This past weekend the Dragons' baseball team became the second school in the last 30 years to win back-to-back state championships in the largest classification. That capped a dominant year for the school's athletic program. The Dragons swept the team swim titles as the boys won their ninth straight championship. The girls soccer team also dominated the state final by beating Katy Tompkins, the previously undefeated No. 1 team in the country, 5-0.
