After winning 51 consecutive games and back-to-back state championships, Celina’s astounding streak came to a halt.
The reigning 4A state champion and No. 1 team in SportsDay’s 5A/others rankings lost two of its first four games of the season to first-year program Prosper Walnut Grove and reigning 5A state champion Grapevine.
Celina now finds itself in eighth in the area rankings with a new 4A team emerging as a top competitor: undefeated Anna.
The team’s fall opened the door for a new No. 1 — three-time state champion Frisco Wakeland, which appears to be back to its winning ways after finishing third in its district last season.
Southlake Carroll remained the top team in Class 6A, as it cruised to an 11-0 start featuring six shutouts, but Flower Mound, Prosper and Wylie East are all threatening its top spot as undefeated 6A programs through non-district play.
