GEORGETOWN — Duncanville players sat despondently on the bench in the waning minutes of Friday’s state semifinal game. Their head coach Nuno Passos stood with his hands on his knees.

Not even a miracle like Nathanael Zozaya’s last-minute bicycle kick could save them against reigning state champion Katy Seven Lakes (24-1-2) in the state semifinal.

Duncanville (20-3-3) never found a way through in a 2-0 loss at Birkelbach Field. Panthers senior midfielder Eduardo Alaniz came close to scoring a wonder-goal twice in the first half. But Noa Stasic’s marker in the 44th minute stood as the winner.

Previous appearances at state: 1 (2019)

State titles: 1 (2019)

Notable: In the regional quarterfinal round, Flower Mound overcame a huge hurdle in top-ranked Allen, the reigning 6A Region I champion. That 2-0 win helped Flower Mound advance to its first regional tournament since 2019, when it beat San Antonio Lee for the 6A state title. Miguel Arenas and Okko Keranen each scored goals in the win over Allen. Flower Mound finished first in a competitive District 6-6A this season.

Players to watch: Senior goalie Morgan English stopped two shootout attempts in Flower Mound’s 6A Region I semifinal win over El Paso Eastlake. English’s save of Prosper’s penalty kick attempt in the first half of its 6A Regional final matchup preceded Landon DeLeuuw’s score that ended up being the game winner. DeLeuuw is a Campbell commit.

GEORGETOWN — Vandegrift goalkeeper Charlie Reed flew toward the ball as it drifted into the box. When he missed his punch, though, Flower Mound senior midfielder Alex Tabbah poked a finish into the vacated net.

For a second time on Friday night, Jaguars senior defender Carter Simpson’s long throw, which senior forward Jack White called a “game changer,” created chaos in the Vandegrift box.

In the first half Jack White capitalized on the confusion. Tabbah’s marker in the second half sealed Flower Mound’s (23-2-2) second-ever trip to the state final. The Jaguars needed just four shots to down Vandegrift (22-3-2) at Birkelbach Field, 2-0, in the second class 6A state semifinal.

Flower Mound’s bid for second state title ends in close battle with Katy Seven Lakes

GEORGETOWN — Flower Mound boys soccer coach David Doyle said sometimes his team responds best when it’s in a pressure situation, such as being behind. That team had a good response to such a scenario on Saturday, but it needed to be a little bit longer. Something in the range of 2½ minutes.

That was about how much time left before Flower Mound possibly had a chance to win by penalty kicks to win a state title, but this was not to be. Aidan Morrison converted a 30-yard free kick with 2:26 left in the second overtime for the winning goal as Katy Seven Lakes edged Flower Mound 2-1 in the UIL Boys Soccer state final at Birkelbach Field. Morrison, a signee with Liberty University, was the 2023 Gatorade National Player of the Year.

Record: 19-5-3

Playoff road: d. Frisco Liberty 4-0, d. Mesquite Poteet 2-0, d. Prosper Walnut Grove 4-1, d. McKinney North 2-0, d. West Mesquite 1-0, d. Leander Glenn 2-0.

State titles: 5 (2010, 2017, 2018, 2021, 2022)

Notable: After missing out on the state tournament last season, boys soccer powerhouse Frisco Wakeland is back and seeking its sixth state championship in program history. Last year’s boys 5A champion came from its district when Frisco Lone Star won the title, but Wakeland captured the 9-5A crown this year and could secure its fifth title in the last eight years this weekend. Wakeland has been dominant defensively, allowing just 0.7 goals on average in the regular season and giving up just one in the postseason to Prosper Walnut Grove. Wakeland has a chance to sweep the soccer state titles, as its girls team is competing in the 5A bracket as well.

Players to watch: Wakeland’s strength is its defense, and it has a star-studded crew leading it. Backs Tanner Bowman and Evan Tucker lead the fielders while goalkeeper Adrian Rodgrigues has been a standout all year, posting 13 shutouts and leading Wakeland to four in the postseason. In the regional semifinals, Wakeland held McKinney North — which averages four goals per game — to just four shots on goal in the 2-0 win. In the regional finals, it didn’t allow West Mesquite to take a shot for the first 20 minutes of the second half.

Frisco Wakeland gets back to 5A boys state soccer championship with win over Leander Glenn

GEORGETOWN — The Class 5A boys soccer state final welcomed back a former mainstay on Thursday.

Lase season, Wakeland lost in the regional quarterfinals and missed reaching the state final for the first time since 2015. Wakeland made a lot of changes throughout the year and never found the stability they needed for a deep run, senior defender Tanner Bowman said. They learned and grew from that, though.

“This year, we figured it out in the preseason where everyone should go, what everyone’s job is,” Bowman added. “We’re all doing a good job doing our role and working hard every chance we get.”

Previous appearances at state: 0

State titles: 0

Notable: This year’s Midlothian squad made history, earning a spot in the state tournament for the first time in program history. After falling in the regional finals last year, Midlothian captured one final win over El Paso Burges to secure a trip to Georgetown where it will face Goose Creek Memorial in the state semifinals. Midlothian carries a 13-game win streak into the state tournament and has not lost in 21 games, which dates back to Jan. 13.

Players to watch: Midlothian is a scoring machine, averaging four goals per game in the regular season (No. 4 in the Dallas area). Its offensive efforts have been led by junior Ayden Hildreth (25 goals and 15 assists in regular season), Landon Exley (21 goals in regular season) and Caden Naizer (18 goals and 17 assists in regular season).

GEORGETOWN — Marcus Manu took a few bouncy strides toward the corner flag then jumped high into the air, twisting his body simultaneously. He landed facing the opposite direction, arms and fingers fully extended by his side.

It was Manu’s effort to replicate the celebration made famous by world-class soccer player Cristiano Ronaldo, who made a career of scoring goals in critical knock-out matches. The emulation couldn’t have been more appropriate for the moment.

“I’m just doing the GOAT celebration,” Manu said. “That’s the first thing that came to mind. I kind of saved it. I’ve done it previous years in club soccer, but this is my first time doing it in an important game.”

Midlothian downs Frisco Wakeland, captures first state title in program history

GEORGETOWN — On Saturday, Midlothian went 1-for-1.

In the span of about 48 hours, Midlothian made its first state tournament appearance, advanced to its first state title game and won its first state championship in program history.

Landon Exley’s score iced Midlothians’ 3-1 win over boys soccer powerhouse Frisco Wakeland (19–6–3) in the Class 5A state title game on Saturday at Birkelbach Field.

Senior midfielder Thomas Hayes scored the first goal of the game in the 21st minute to give Wakeland a 1-0 lead, but Midlothian (25–2–3) quickly tied things up in the 22nd minute when Caden Naizer made his penalty kick attempt. The teams remained tied at one by halftime.
