Softball playoffs: Plano West shuts out South Grand Prairie, moves on to third round

Plus, Northwest Eaton and Keller Timber Creek also advance.

COPPELL – On the same day Plano West resumed Game 2 of its best-of-three playoff series against South Grand Prairie, it posted a shutout in Game 3 to move on to the next round.

Starting pitcher Carra Cleaves shined on the mound, striking out five and allowing zero runs over seven innings. Meanwhile, her teammates racked up seven hits to give Plano West a 5-0 win over South Grand Prairie on Saturday.

Kaaya Mehta led Plano West with two RBIs and finished 2-for-2 at bat, while Izzy Dunn went 2-for-3 at the plate to drive in one run and score two.

Not long before Plano West won Game 3, it beat South Grand Prairie 10-5 in Game 2.

With Plano West leading South Grand Prairie 10-3 in the top of the sixth inning on Friday in Game 2, play was halted by lightning in Grand Prairie. Coaches decided to resume play at 11 a.m. Saturday at Coppell, the scheduled site for Game 3.

Dunn paced the offense with four hits in five at bats, driving in a team-high three runs. Dunn also scored three runs for Plano West (24-13-1).

Adriana Mountcastle’s three-run double with two out in the eighth inning powered South Grand Prairie to a 7-3 victory in Game 1 Thursday in Plano. Plano West forced an extra inning with Abby Cuellar’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh that made the score 3-3.

The Lady Wolves broke open a close game with a six-run fourth inning. Dunn, Kaaya Mehta and Abby Chunn contributed run-scoring singles. Carra Cleaves drove in two with a base hit and also started the rally with a double.

Plano West turned infield singles by Dean and Cuellar along with a South Grand Prairie throwing error into a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

The lead grew to 3-0 on Dean’s two-run triple down the left field line. South Grand Prairie got on the board on a solo homer over the left field wall by Mountcastle to make it 3-1.

Jasmyn Lloyd singled to open the home half of the third inning, stole second, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and beat a throw home on a squeeze bunt by Jade Evans that cut the Plano West lead to 3-2.

Gianna Orozco added a solo shot in the fourth for the third Lady Warrior run.

Northwest Eaton 8, Midland 2: Kaylee Vien homered twice — once each in the second and fifth innings —and had four RBIs to help lift Eaton past Midland and win the best-of-three series 2-1. Eaton beat Midland 13-6 in Game 1 and lost to Midland 5-1 in Game 2.

Keller Timber Creek 10, Wolfforth Frenship 4: Driving in a team-high four RBIs, Isabella Bojkovic went 3-for-5 at the plate. Her homer in the top of the first inning gave Timber Creek an early 2-0 lead. Timber Creek won Game 1 against Frenship 2-1 on Friday and fell to Frenship 4-2 in Game 2 earlier Saturday. The Game 3 win advanced Timber Creek to the next round.
