Volleyball area rankings: No. 1 Byron Nelson keeps winning, will face No. 2 Keller soon

Hebron vs. Flower Mound and Plano West vs. Plano East showdowns await on Friday.

Trophy Club Byron Nelson remained No. 1 in the 6A area rankings and ran its winning streak to 23 matches with a 23-25, 25-17, 25-10, 25-19 win over state No. 20-ranked Southlake Carroll on Tuesday.

Byron Nelson, ranked No. 2 in the nation by MaxPreps, dropped a set for the first time since Aug. 27 (also against Carroll) after winning its previous nine matches in straight sets. But Washington pledge Kylie Kleckner and Rice pledge Ashylyn Seay combined for 51 kills and 32 digs and sophomore Sophee Peterson had 55 assists as Byron Nelson (27-1 overall) improved to 9-0 in District 4-6A and remained one match ahead of Keller.

Keller (21-3, 8-1), ranked No. 2 in the area, will play at Byron Nelson on Oct. 15. That is the one tough match that Byron Nelson has remaining as it seeks an undefeated district record.

Third-ranked Hebron, a five-time state champion, is 6-0 in District 5-6A and hasn’t lost a set in district play. Hebron is tied with Flower Mound for the district lead after Flower Mound swept third-place Coppell 25-15, 25-20, 25-12 on Tuesday.

It’s the sixth straight win for Flower Mound after an 11-13 start. It will play at Hebron on Friday and then host Hebron in the regular-season finale on Oct. 29.

Fourth-ranked Plano West improved to 9-0 in District 6-6A with a 25-21, 25-21, 26-24 win over McKinney Boyd on Tuesday. That came after a three-set sweep of No. 10 Prosper on Friday, and Plano West has now won 10 in a row.

Plano West has a one-match lead over Plano East, and they will meet at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Plano East. Plano West won their first district matchup 25-18, 25-21, 25-21 as Pepperdine pledge Reese Poerner, AaJaylah Zeno and UCLA beach volleyball pledge Blaire Bowers combined for 33 kills. Plano East had a big four-set win over then-No. 7 ranked Allen on Friday as Simone Heard registered 26 kills and Dakota Huynh had 24 digs.

Rockwall (22-13, 5-0) remained undefeated in District 10-6A, and Wylie (26-6, 9-0) did the same in 9-6A. Wylie has won 17 in a row and has lost just one set in district play.

Prestonwood (26-2), ranked No. 4 in the nation, got a tough test Tuesday but beat Plano John Paul II 27-25, 25-15, 25-15. Prestonwood’s only loss to a Texas team this season was against Southlake Carroll on Aug. 15, and Prestonwood has lost only four matches to Texas teams since the start of the 2022 season while winning back-to-back TAPPS 6A state championships. Prestonwood has won 102 of its last 109 matches overall.

Defending 5A state champion Lovejoy (25-7 overall), ranked No. 18 nationally, is 6-0 in District 9-5A and has a one-match lead over Melissa. Lovejoy beat Melissa 20-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-17 on Friday as Anna Barr, Gentry Barker and Bella Lopez combined for 42 kills and Brooke Starr and Emerson Boyd combined for 56 assists.

Colleyville Heritage (26-5, 5-0) has won 14 in a row and has a one-match lead in District 6-5A over Argyle and Birdville. Heritage beat Birdville 25-16, 25-12, 25-22 on Tuesday as MaxPreps first-team All-American Suli Davis, a BYU pledge, had 23 kills and 29 digs and Central Florida pledge Sarah Mendoza had 28 digs.

Frisco Wakeland has won 12 in a row and is 6-0 in District 12-5A, leading Highland Park by one match. Wakeland rallied to beat Frisco Lone Star 22-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-22 on Tuesday as LSU pledge Hannah Lee, Sam Houston State pledge Bella Wood and West Virginia pledge Sarah Pfiffner combined for 35 kills, Aubree Fernandez had 31 digs and Pfiffner and Jaleah Bauss combined for 52 assists.

Argyle Liberty Christian joined the 5A-others area rankings after beating then-No. 7 Ursuline. Liberty Christian also has a win over 6A state-ranked Plano East.
