Nearly two weeks after a driver fatally shot another man in Garland, police on Wednesday released new details and video of the road-rage incident.
Francisco Javier Pasillas, 33, was shot Aug. 22 after his wife said he threw a glass bottle at a pickup because he was mad when the truck cut him off, according to police.
The driver of the truck, who has not been identified or charged with a crime, told detectives he noticed a Cadillac Escalade driving erratically and following his truck closely, police said.
Both he and his passenger said they thought they were being shot at after they heard a loud pop and learned the rear window had shattered as the Escalade pulled up alongside them, police said.
Video from a nearby business showed the Escalade catching up to the truck. In the footage, a man appears to be throwing an object out an open window.
The truck driver, who indicated he feared for his life, shot at the Escalade, striking Pasillas, according to police. He then drove to the police station to report the incident.
Officers responded about 12:30 p.m. to the 1300 block of Northwest Highway, near West Centerville Road, and found Pasillas with a gunshot wound in the Escalade. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
"This shooting is a tragic example of senseless road rage, impacting the lives of numerous people in multiple families," police said in a written statement.
Police said they have been in contact with Pasillas' family almost daily and that the other driver has been cooperating with the investigation.
The case will be referred to a Dallas County grand jury to determine whether charges will be filed.
