Grapevine-Colleyville ISD board race draws five candidates for two seats

The May 1 race features two incumbents among the field of five.

Five candidates are vying for two seats on the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Board of Trustees.

The May 1 election will fill places 1 and 2.

Shannon Braun: A mother of two adult children who attended GCISD schools, Braun has lived in Colleyville for 40 years. “Thinking outside the box and challenging the status quo is paramount to addressing the obstacles before us as a district,” Braun writes on her Facebook page. “I am a straight shooter and I speak truth.”

Sergio Harris: An Army veteran and a public school teacher of 10 years, Harris says he has a passion for education. He believes his background as a parent and educator provides him “a unique perspective that would prove profoundly useful to the GCISD staff and community,” according to his campaign website.

Mindy McClure: The incumbent was elected to the board of trustees in 2015. She served as secretary of the board for the 2017-18 and 2018-19 school years. Currently she is board vice president. She “has been an active, hands-on GCISD and community volunteer for over 20 years,” according to the GCISD website.

Place 2

Stetson Clark: The Grapevine father of four moved with his family to Texas five years ago, according to his campaign website. “We wanted to be part of this great state and its tradition of excellence, family and community,” he said. Clark said he believes his children’s “education shapes their future, and good schools with excellent teachers are vital to that journey. We owe it to our children and our teachers to be active participants in their education.”

Becky St. John: The incumbent was first elected to the board in 2009. She was selected as board secretary for 2012-2013 and 2014-2015, and board vice president for 2017-2018. St. John has lived in Grapevine since 2001 and has held various school district and community roles. In GCISD, she has been a member of the District Excellence Committee since 2006, has served on the Budget Advisory Committee, and is a member of the Dove Elementary PTA, according to the GCISD website.

Also appearing on the ballot will be city council races, including contested races for mayor and city council Place 2.
