Southlake names new park in honor of local family

The John R. (J.R.) and Ora Graham Shivers Park is located in the Metairie subdivision.

A new park in Southlake has been named in honor of a local family who helped start the area’s first school more than a century ago.

The John R. (J.R.) and Ora Graham Shivers Park is located in the Metairie subdivision, at the southwest corner of the White Chapel Boulevard and Dove Road intersection.

According to the city, the nearly three acres of parkland features natural vegetation, a granite path and large stone benches.

J.R. Shivers was one of the first three Carroll School trustees and instrumental in the 1919 founding of the three-room schoolhouse called the Carroll School, the city said.
