New public art installation takes flight in McKinney

Along with the Arts in Bloom festival, visitors can check out a new butterfly-themed public art installation.

A new public art project will have a fitting first flight this weekend.

The Monarchs of McKinney is a new art installation of eight steel monarch butterfly sculptures. Each artwork is painted by a McKinney artist “to attract and educate visitors and residents alike on the importance of the monarch butterfly to our ecosystem,” according to the city’s website.

The sculptures can be found throughout the Historic Downtown McKinney Cultural District, which is coincidentally the location of this weekend’s Arts in Bloom festival.

The butterflies were painted by the Meditative Mandala Group, Lynne Hubner, Kim Guthrie, Melissa Patrello, Carolyn Funk, Denise Kendrick and Anne Royer. The art dovetails with the city’s McKinney Monarch Initiative, which seeks to increase awareness about the pollinators through public programs and other events.
