A fire erupted Friday afternoon in Carrollton after an 18-wheeler backed into a transformer, officials said.

Plumes of dark smoke drifted into the sky after the crash, which happened around 1 p.m. on Wiley Post Road, near the Addison Airport and Midway Road, officials said. No injuries were reported.

Flammable liquid in the transformer exploded upon impact, Carrollton fire spokeswoman Debbie Carpenter said. She said it was an isolated explosion and that there was little damage to the surrounding area.

“As exciting as an explosion sounds, it was actually pretty minor,” Carpenter said.

Responders isolated and cut the transformer so the only electrical impact was to AER Manufacturing, a nearby business, Carpenter said.

Emergency officials from Addison and neighboring areas responded to the scene, which was under control by 2 p.m., officials said.

Blake Scheurle, 26, said he was at work in a warehouse near the crash site when it happened. He said he didn’t hear a boom or loud noise but that the walls shook for a few seconds.

“I heard a lot of sirens and saw firetrucks driving by,” Scheurle said. “There was an impending sound getting closer and closer to ground, it seemed like.”
