Off-duty McKinney firefighters playing golf respond to house fire

The group formed a bucket brigade to put the fire out.

Four off-duty McKinney firefighters responded to a house fire Wednesday morning — while they were playing golf.

Firefighters Casey Durham and Chris Dudley and Capts. Jared Turner and Bill South had just finished shifts at work and were playing a round of golf at WestRidge Golf Course in McKinney, according to WFAA-TV (Channel 8).

Dudley told the station that near the seventh hole they noticed smoke coming from a house near the green. Upon a closer look, the firefighters knew they had to act.

While no one was inside the home at the time, the firefighters worked to staunch the flames by filling flower pots with water from the kitchen sink.

“We took some empty flower pots and just formed an old school bucket brigade and throwing water on,” Turner told the station. “Then it became a competition. We were trying to get it out before the engine company got there.”

The foursome was successful in stopping the fire from spreading, and soon on-duty firefighters arrived.

With no injuries and the fire out, the firefighters went back to playing golf.

“We have a duty to act, and we’re always on duty,” Turner told the station. “Even when we’re off, we’re still compelled to act. If we can help, we will.”
