Arlington is now home to a giant kaleidoscope, the city’s newest public art

Check out the piece at the Meadowbrook Park sculpture garden, a mile east of downtown.

The Arlington Sculpture Garden has a new addition — a giant kaleidoscope.

Called “Brighten My Day,” the interactive piece allows viewers to peer into an eyepiece to see an assortment of bright colors.

Artists and Mansfield residents Eddie and Mary Phillips created the piece, which includes a stationary steel tube and hand-blown glass wheels that turn to reveal different colorscapes. Whimsical orange circles act a stand for the kaleidoscope.

The piece is weather-proof, but will acquire a darker patina over the years.

“I feel during these current times the kaleidoscope might brighten the day of many, put a sparkle in the eye of the weary and cause the brain cells to dance around again,” Joe Bruner, art selection chairman for the Arlington Sculpture Garden Foundation, said in a city news release. “The piece has both whimsical and artistic greatness.”

A mile east of downtown at 249-201 Willis Ave., the city’s sculpture garden at Meadowbrook Park was founded in 2006 and includes a selection of steel and bronze pieces. The park is free and accessible, with a walking path, seating and a nearby creek.
