A New York Times analysis of COVID-19 data says people in Collin County who are unvaccinated face an extremely high risk of contracting the virus.
An average of 134 daily cases per 100,000 people was reported in the past two weeks, with a test positivity rate of 13%, according to the report.
Due to the high positivity rate, it is likely that cases are being “significantly undercounted,” according to The Times.
Collin County’s risk will be reduced to “very high” if the test positivity rate drops below 10% and the daily case rate becomes less than about 45.7 cases per 100,000 people over a two-week period, the report states.
In data for Texas, The Times said it mainly relies on reports from the state as well as health districts or county governments.
About 69% of Collin County’s eligible population has been fully vaccinated, according to data from the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. And approximately 89% of people 65 and older in the county are fully vaccinated.
On Friday, at least 2,973 North Texans were hospitalized with the coronavirus, according to the Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council. That figure included 160 people who were hospitalized with COVID-19 in a 24-hour period, The Dallas Morning News reported.
The figures from Friday were nearly four times greater than the total 800 COVID-19 hospitalizations on Dec. 7.
The Texas Department of Health and Human Services has compiled information about COVID-19 testing.
