In honor of National Police Week, Grapevine remembers the night watchmen, who patrolled the city for nearly 50 years before the Grapevine Police Department arrived in 1956.
Mayor William Tate told the local Rotary club, two years ago, that his grandfather was the first to take on the responsibilities of a night watchman in 1907.
As several more joined, they continued to protect the Grapevine community at no cost until the city authorized their $25 monthly salary in 1911, according to a tweet from the Grapevine Police Department.
While they are now long gone, the Grapevine Watchman still watches over the city, standing atop the Grapevine City Hall with his lantern. The 8-foot-tall bronze sculpture, made by artist Jack Bryant, honors the men who served the city for nearly half a century.
