The city of Richardson is offering ways for residents to turn their Christmas trees into mulch and compost, as well as the chance to keep large boxes out of the trash, which can serve as a tip-off to thieves.
Both programs run through Feb. 1.
Trees may be dropped off at the Municipal Service Center, 1260 Columbia Dr., or set out at the curb and picked up as part of the City’s weekly Brush and Bulky Item Collection, the city stated in an announcement.
Trees that can be disposed must be natural (not artificial), unflocked and have all decorations and any nails removed.
Through a regional partnership between Richardson, Plano, Allen, McKinney, Frisco and Texas Pure, the mulch and compost are created for use in landscaping by the cities. They are also offered to the public for purchase.
Residents of the cities listed above will receive a discount.
Flattened boxes may be dropped off at these locations:
Custer Park 700 W. Renner Rd. (near the tennis courts)
Recycle Center (available year-round) 102 N. Cottonwood Dr.
1500 Apollo Rd. (near the Huffhines Tennis Center courts)
Breckinridge Park 5200 Park Vista Rd. (near the baseball complex)
More information is available at www.cor.net/treecycling and www.cor.net/boxrecycling
Residents may also call 972-744-4111 for BABIC pick-up and to request that the tree be collected for composting.
