Artists Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo in spotlight together again with Dallas auction, exhibit

Dallas Auction Gallery to show Rivera painting ahead of Tuesday auction that coincides with Kahlo exhibit at DMA.

A Diego Rivera painting will be up for auction this week through Dallas Auction Gallery, coinciding with an exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art that features Frida Kahlo’s work.

Kahlo was Rivera’s third wife and the Mexican artists, by most accounts, were engaged in a volatile, tempestuous relationship that lasted for years. The auction will take place Sept. 24, while the Kahlo exhibit at the Dallas Museum of Art runs through Nov. 17.

“I just feel like it’s so timely for us to have this painting at the same time that the Dallas Museum of Art has the Frida Kahlo show happening at the same time,” said Reyne Hirsch, the gallery owner whose venue is hosting the Rivera auction.

The Rivera painting — La Casona De Vizcaya dated 1907 — has been on exhibit in several museums in Mexico City, Ohio, Los Angeles and New York. Its estimated worth is at least $1.5 million. Bidding starts at $750,000.

“You don’t see a lot of his original works,” Hirsch said. “It’s been in a private collection since 1987.”

In addition to the Rivera paintings, the auction will also showcase a wide range of items, including 19th-century furniture, French bronze sculptures and German porcelain plaques, according to Hirsch.

The auction start at 6 p.m. Tuesday and will take place online.
