The father of a 3-week-old was arrested Saturday night after the infant was hospitalized in Dallas with a "significant level of injury," Navarro County officials say.
Rogelio Ortiz, 21, was arrested by Dallas County Hospital District police and charged with injury to a child, according to the Navarro County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office, which described the case as "highly disturbing," has not released details about the extent of the child's injuries.
The victim's mother called 911 Saturday evening to report that she was going to a local hospital with the baby, KWTX-TV reported.
Corsicana Fire Rescue alerted Navarro County authorities after noting the severity of the child's injuries was inconsistent with the explanation they were given, the sheriff's office said.
The child was taken by helicopter to a Dallas hospital, where Ortiz was later arrested, officials said.
Ortiz lives in Rice, about 10 miles north of Corsicana. He was taken to the Dallas County jail Sunday and transferred Monday morning to the Navarro County jail.
