Driver of stolen Dallas Fire-Rescue ambulance taken into custody

The vehicle was stolen in Dallas and led authorities on a pursuit through Collin County.

Authorities pursued a stolen Dallas Fire-Rescue ambulance into Collin County before they eventually took its driver into custody Monday afternoon.

The ambulance had been taken from Fire Station 53 in Far East Dallas earlier in the day, KXAS-TV (NBC5) reported.

The ambulance was speeding north on U.S. Highway 75 in Plano about 2 p.m. — signaling when it changed lanes — and an unmarked police car was following behind.

Texas Department of Public Safety troopers joined the pursuit as the ambulance left the highway and drove through Allen for about 15 minutes, repeatedly driving on the wrong side of the street.

The ambulance then took the Sam Rayburn Tollway into McKinney and again drove through neighborhoods as police tried to stop it with spike strips, eventually blowing out two of its tires.

The driver got out and was apprehended by state troopers shortly before 3 p.m. after a brief attempt to run in the 500 block of Joyce Way in McKinney. Authorities did not release his name.
