The police shooting of an armed woman who fired shots in the terminal at Dallas Love Field on Monday, grounding flights, was not the first security incident at the airport.
In June 2016, a rock-wielding man was shot by police after a domestic disturbance. Shawn Diamond, 29, was shot by police after throwing rocks and a traffic cone at his ex-girlfriend’s car outside the terminal. Airport officials said it was believed to be the first shooting in the history of Love Field.
During the incident, travelers inside the terminal heard the gunshots and, in a panic, some ran past a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint between the ticketing area and the gates. As a result, the TSA had to remove everyone from the gate area and all passengers had to be screened again.
Perhaps the most serious incident came in April 2013 when a Garland man was able to drive his pickup through an open gate and speed down an airport taxiway at 100 mph before he came to a stop and sat down in a hangar, where he was apprehended.
On Nov. 22 last year, part of Dallas Love Field was closed briefly while police investigated reports of a suspicious package. The baggage claim and upper-level traffic in the area were cleared while Dallas police assigned to the airport investigated and the bomb squad was called. Authorities said the package was left by the airport’s Christmas decoration vendor and the situation was resolved at 7:35 a.m.
