Parker County preteen dies after shooting her father then herself, police say

The Parker County Sheriff’s Office said the girl had been planning the killing for weeks.

Update: This story is updated to reflect the 12-year-old from Parker County died of her self-inflicted gunshot wound.

A 12-year-old girl died last week after she shot her father then turned the gun on herself, according to the Parker County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers responded to a home in northwest Parker County around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and found the 12-year-old lying on the street with “what appeared to be a gunshot wound to the head” and a handgun beneath her, the release said.

Her 38-year-old father was inside the home with a gunshot wound in his abdomen.

Investigators believe the girl shot her father before leaving the scene and shooting herself, the release said.

Both were flown to local hospitals. The girl died on Sunday, Sept. 22, and her father was recently released from the hospital, the sheriff’s office said Wednesday.

Police later learned the girl had been planning to kill her family and pets for several weeks, the release said. She was also allegedly talking with another juvenile female who lives in Lufkin about her plans.

The Lufkin girl, also 12 years old, also discussed killing her father “but did not go through with the plan,” the release said.

The girls talked about going to Georgia together after the planned killings, according to police.

The Lufkin girl was taken into police custody last week and charged with charged with conspiracy to commit murder.

The Sheriff’s Office does not identify juvenile suspects and is not releasing the names of the adults in this case in an effort to further protect the minors’ identities.

The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the Lufkin Police Department.

CORRECTION, 2 p.m., Sept. 28, 2022: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the 12-year-old from Parker County was charged in the shooting. The Lufkin 12-year-old was charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
