Man accused of trying to kidnap girl Monday in Tarrant County arrested after car chase

Steve Bayse, 62, is facing multiple charges, including kidnapping, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and aggravated assault against a public servant, according to the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office.

Update:
Correction: This report was revised at 4 p.m. Wednesday to reflect that the attempting kidnapping occurred outside the city limits of Crowley, Texas.

A man was arrested Monday after he tried to kidnap a girl from a neighborhood near Crowley, Texas, the Tarrant County sheriff’s department said.

Shortly before 6:30 p.m. Monday, Tarrant County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 13000 block of Lansman Drive, where someone reported a kidnapping in progress. Crowley is south of Fort Worth.

Deputies were told a suspect tried to kidnap the child from the address, but the parents were able to save the girl, the sheriff’s department said in a Tuesday news release.

The mother of the child provided authorities with information about the suspect vehicle, which was later found by deputies.

When deputies approached the vehicle, the suspect, identified as 62-year-old Crowley resident Steve Bayse, refused to stop and led authorities on a chase, the sheriff’s department said.

Bayse stopped his vehicle multiple times and acted as if he would surrender before trying to drive away again, the sheriff’s department said.

Deputies tried a “high-risk stop,” but Bayse did not stop, and instead struck three law enforcement vehicles and almost hit a deputy with his vehicle, according to the sheriff’s department. He eventually stopped at a grocery store parking lot, where he was arrested.

Bayse was at the Tarrant County jail Tuesday and is facing multiple charges, including kidnapping, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and aggravated assault against a public servant, the sheriff’s department said. His bail is $125,000.

It is unclear if Bayse, who is unrelated to the child he allegedly tried to kidnap, has an attorney.
