Man faces attempted capital murder after police say he tried to hang his 8-year-old son

Police say they found 32-year-old Kendall Thigpen-Watkins and his son hanging from a a staircase baluster.

A McKinney man is facing an attempted capital murder charge after police say he tried to hang himself and his 8-year-old son.

Officers were dispatched on June 23 to a home in the 9800 block of Copperhead Lane, near Black Bear Drive, where police say 32-year-old Kendall Thigpen-Watkins was threatening to kill himself and his son.

When officers arrived, they found Thigpen-Watkins and the boy hanging from a staircase baluster, according to police.

“Our officers immediately cut the rope and provided life-saving measures to both Thigpen-Watkins and the child,” a police statement said.

Thigpen-Watkins and the boy were taken to the hospital. Police said Friday the boy has been released.

Thigpen-Watkins was booked into the Collin County jail Monday on a charge of attempted capital murder. He remained in custody Friday, with bail set at $300,000.
