What we know about the shooting at Wilmer-Hutchins High School

A student shot and wounded another student in a classroom at the southeast Oak Cliff high school, authorities said.

A student shot and wounded another student at Wilmer-Hutchins High School on Friday, according to officials.

Authorities descended on the southeast Oak Cliff school in Dallas on Friday morning after reports of “an active shooter incident.”

The wounded student was taken to a hospital, officials said. Here’s what we know.

Dallas Fire-Rescue crews responded just after 10:30 a.m. to the school in the 5500 block of Langdon Road, spokesman Jason Evans said. Nine Dallas police units also responded, according to police call logs.

At a news conference, Dallas ISD Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde said a student is believed to have shot another student in the leg.

“This is a very, very, very hard day today, and I’m standing here with more than just a heavy heart,” Elizalde said.

She said the shooting occurred in a classroom, and others inside, mainly the teacher, helped “avoid additional tragedy.”

Who was shot or hurt?

One student was taken to a hospital, authorities said. Officials said the student was shot in the upper thigh and believe their injuries to not be life-threatening.

Dallas ISD officials said in a post on X at 11:15 a.m. that all students and team members were safe.

Dallas ISD officials said in a social media post a little before 1 p.m. that the school had begun releasing students to parents and guardians at the main gym.

Who was arrested?

The student suspected in the shooting is in custody, officials said. No additional information was available on what led up to the shooting.

Students staged a walkout of classes the Monday following the shooting.

Some students told The Dallas Morning News they participated in the walkout because they felt school leaders didn’t substantially address the shooting when they arrived to school, but rather just told them counseling services were available and advising them to continue regular classwork.

Students said they were concerned for their safety.
