Third man arrested in connection with fatal Denton shooting inside pickup truck, PD says

At about midnight on May 25, Denton police officers were called to the 3200 block of West Windsor Drive, where multiple people reported hearing gunshots, according to police.

Authorities on Thursday arrested a third person after a shooting in Denton last month that left one man dead and another injured, police said.

At about midnight May 25, officers were dispatched to multiple calls about gunshots at an apartment complex in the 3200 block of West Windsor Drive, according to Denton police.

Officers found two men who had been shot inside a truck, police said.

Investigators believe a man, whose name has not been released by authorities, was inside a parked pickup truck in the area when three men “forced” him out of the vehicle at gunpoint, police said.

One of the men, identified by police as 25-year-old River Williams, got into the passenger side of the truck.

The person who was forced out of the vehicle got back inside his truck and tried to drive away with Williams, who had a gun, still inside, police said.

During a “struggle” for the gun, Williams was fatally shot, police said. The driver was also shot, but his injuries were “non-life-threatening,” according to police.

Authorities identified the two others who were with Williams at the time as Riley Clowers, 24, and Zachary Lowe, 34, police said. Clowers was arrested May 25, and Lowe was arrested Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting.

In a Thursday news release, Denton police said investigators believe an additional person, 31-year-old Daniel Butureza, of Newark, “assisted in the aggravated assault by blocking the pickup truck from escape.” He was arrested Thursday in Haslet.

“Because Williams died during the commission of an aggravated assault, arrest warrants for Murder were obtained for Butureza, Lowe, and Clowers,” Denton police said in the news release.

Lowe’s bail has been set at $250,000 and Clowers’ bail is $100,000, online records showed. Both men were at the Denton County jail.

Butureza’s bail had not been set as of Thursday evening, police said.

Authorities are still investigating the shooting.
