1 dead after teen mistakes motorist as rival, shoots vehicle in The Woods, police say

Terron Moore, 18, is facing a murder charge in connection with the Thursday shooting, Dallas police said

Update:
3:45 p.m., June 14, 2024: This story was updated with details from an arrest-warrant affidavit.

An 18-year-old who is facing a murder charge told police he shot at a passing motorist Thursday morning after he mistook them for someone they were “having an ongoing feud” with, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit obtained by The Dallas Morning News.

Dallas police said no one in the passing vehicle was struck, but a 17-year-old sitting in the backseat of a separate nearby vehicle was hit. The 17-year-old, who later died, was seen on surveillance video hanging out with a group of people that included the alleged shooter before the incident, according to the affidavit obtained by The News on Friday.

At 3:10 a.m. Thursday, police responded to a call about gunshots in the 7400 block of Pineberry Road, near Sorcey Road, in The Woods area, according to a Friday morning news release. An occupant in a vehicle driving on the road called 911 after at least two gunmen standing on the street with a group of people began shooting at the vehicle, according to the affidavit.

No one in the vehicle was struck by gunfire, police said. However, one of the people who was standing with the group earlier — whom police identified as Christopher Wells — was shot, according to the affidavit.

Members of the group drove Wells to a nearby emergency room, according to the affidavit. Once at the emergency room, two people exited the vehicle with Wells before the driver left with the vehicle.

The two people, including one identified by authorities as Moore, were later detained by police, according to the affidavit. Police did not identify the other person.

Wells was pronounced dead at TotalCare Emergency Room in Cedar Hill at 3:50 a.m., according to online Dallas County medical examiner records.

Police took Moore to Dallas police headquarters, where he consented to an interview without an attorney present, according to the affidavit. He told police he began shooting at the vehicle on Pineberry Road because the group of people thought the vehicle was someone they knew and had an “ongoing feud with,” according to the affidavit.

Moore feared people in the vehicle were preparing to conduct a drive-by shooting against the group, according to the affidavit.

The vehicle used to transport Wells was later recovered by police. An inspection revealed what police described as multiple bullet holes in the vehicle, including near the backseat — where Moore said Wells was seated at the time of the shooting, according to the affidavit.

The surveillance video reviewed by police shows Moore shooting in the direction of the vehicle’s backseat. Moore identified himself in the video when police showed him the footage, according to the affidavit.
