Off-duty Fort Worth officer involved in hit-and-run turned shooting

An off-duty officer called 911 to report he was following a driver who hit his car and left, police say

Fort Worth police are investigating a hit-and-run that turned into a shooting Tuesday afternoon involving an off-duty officer, officials say.

According to a news release, the off-duty FWPD officer called 911 to report a truck had struck his vehicle on Interstate 35W south near the Morningside Drive exit and did not stop. The officer told dispatchers that he was following the truck, described as a red Ford F-150.

During the call, the officer told the dispatcher the truck attempted to ram his vehicle, then he told the dispatcher shots were fired.

The incident continued south on I-35W until it came to a stop on the southbound service road near Bellvue Drive, the release said. Responding officers found the driver suspected of being involved in the hit-and-run had been struck by gunfire multiple times.

The release said the driver was taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. The release did not say if the off-duty officer was injured.

Fort Worth police said the incident is still under investigation. Police did not say if the off-duty officer or driver involved in the hit-and-run will face charges.
