The three were taken to hospitals and their conditions are unknown, police said. One of those wounded is a Dallas ISD student, who is expected to make a full recovery, a district spokesperson has said.

Where was the shooting?

The Continental building is in the 1800 block of Commerce Street, near South St. Paul Street.

The building was constructed in 1948, and in 2013 was redeveloped into more than 200 rental units. The 12-story building is the first in Dallas to feature underground parking.

Over the past 25 years, downtown Dallas has grown from a few hundred residents to a “thriving neighborhood” of more than 15,000 people, said Jennifer Scripps. She is the president and CEO of Downtown Dallas, Inc., which acts as a steward and advocate for downtown Dallas.

Scripps said in a statement that the organization has no tolerance for violent crime in the city’s center and works in conjunction with Dallas police to ensure downtown remains safe.

“While preliminary indications are the shooting was an isolated incident, it is no less unacceptable,” Scripps said. “Our top priority is and always will be the safety of our community.”

Two people told The News they saw a young person running away from the building who said he had been shot. One resident said that security guards patrol inside the building and that the complex gives residents consistent updates about any issues.

“Since I been here, I’ve felt real safe in the building,” Leslie Johnson said. “I believe the apartment complex has our best interest in mind. But I don’t feel safe now.”
