Cleburne police make arrest in fatal shooting

Giovanni Jimenez Diaz, 20, faces a murder charge in the death of Kaylee Merchant, 18, police said.

Cleburne police said they arrested a man Friday in the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old woman almost a week ago.

Giovanni Jimenez Diaz, 20, was booked into the Parker County jail and faces a charge of murder, police said. Investigators identified him as a suspect shortly after the shooting.

Officers responded around 1 p.m. Sept. 8 to the 500 block of Poindexter Avenue on reports of a shooting. They learned while en route that a woman had been shot and taken to another location. When they arrived there, officers found Kaylee Lanay Merchant with gunshot wounds. She was taken to a hospital, where she died.

Police determined Merchant was the passenger in an SUV that was “involved in an altercation at the initial location,” police said.
