Weatherford High School’s homecoming dance was evacuated Saturday night after officers were told someone had a gun but no evidence of a weapon was found, according to police.
A news release from Weatherford police called the incident a “scary situation” and said it was “terrifying” for the students and their loved ones.
“While they should have been having a fun time at their homecoming dance, they felt like they needed to run for their lives,” the release said.
About 8:43 p.m. Saturday, off-duty Weatherford officers working security at the dance saw an altercation between a school administrator and a 17-year-old student.
The student was allegedly smoking a THC vape on the dance floor and got into a fight with the administrator, according to the release. The student was arrested and the administrator sustained minor injuries, police said.
Roughly five minutes later, officers were told someone had a gun. The officers called for additional police to respond to the school and the building was evacuated, according to the release.
As officers searched the building, there were additional reports that a person with a weapon was in a bathroom and at the baseball fields. No weapons or evidence of a weapon being used were found in any of the areas or seen on surveillance footage.
Police said officers at the school never heard any shots.
“We want you to know that our Officers were at the homecoming dance the entire time and the students’ safety is our utmost priority,” the release said. “Your kids may have lingering fears from [Saturday], please talk to them about what happened.”
Counselors will be available at the school for students, and police asked that anyone with information related to the incident call 817-598-4310.
