Dallas police: Four facing murder charges in August death

Four people are facing charges of capital murder after a man was found dead in far northeast Dallas just over a month ago, police said Wednesday.

According to a Dallas police news release, police responded to a call for service at about 11:45 a.m. on Aug. 11 and found 48-year-old Shaun Michael Smith dead in the 11500 block of Plano Road.

Police said Byron Louis Nelson, 56, was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service on Tuesday and is currently in the Gregg County jail in East Texas. Three others, Jared Collin Russell, 27; Deanna Marie Palmer, 23; and Marissa Krystin Mitchell, 36; were arrested in late August and are currently in custody at the Dallas County jail, police said.

All four face a capital murder charge, according to jail records. Nelson is being held on $1.14 million bail. Russell does not have a bond amount set, while Mitchell is being held on $1 million bail and Palmer is being held on $250,000 bail.

Police did not say how Smith was killed. According to the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s case file, Smith’s time of death was 7:50 a.m., which was nearly four hours before he was found by police.
