Duncanville officer saves newborn on the side of the road

The infant’s mother had just given birth in a gas station parking lot and the baby wasn’t breathing.

The Duncanville City Council and Police Department this week honored a police officer who saved the life of a newborn last month.

On Sept. 6, just before 11:30 p.m., Officer Anai Figueroa answered a call to a medical emergency in the 600 block of North Clark Road. A woman had just given birth in a gas station parking lot and the newborn was limp and not breathing.

The body-worn camera footage of the incident shows how Figueroa put on a pair of gloves while responding to the call over the police radio.

When she arrived at the scene, Figueroa asked the mother, “Esta respirando?” which means, “Is he breathing?”

Although the body camera was obstructed, Figueroa started performing lifesaving measures. Minutes later, the sound of the baby crying can be heard.

Both the newborn and the mother were stabilized and taken to the hospital for additional medical care, according to the police.

On Tuesday at a City Council meeting, Figueroa was honored with a Life-Saving Award, which is given to officers who have played a direct role in saving a life.

“Officer Figueroa’s rapid thinking and decisive actions exemplify her dedication and commitment to public safety,” the city said in a news release. “... Officer Figueroa joins a brave group of officers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to protect and serve the community.”
