McKinney ISD is handing out 13,000 laptops to students. Here’s how

The district will distribute the MacBooks through a combination of drive-through events and on-campus pickups.

The first day of school in McKinney ISD is Aug. 13. But with a return to campuses delayed by at least three weeks, students will need to use technology to learn at the start of the 2020-21 school year.

To make that happen, the school district plans to put 13,000 laptops in students’ hands before the semester begins.

The approach to actually getting the MacBooks into students’ hands will vary by grade level. What won’t change is that the person retrieving the laptop is required to wear a mask and respect social distancing. They will also need a photo ID and the student’s ID number.

High school students will be able to get their laptops from their campuses. Many students should already have a district-issued laptop in their possession. Those entering 9th grade or students in grades 10 through 12 without a laptop will receive specific instructions from their campus.

Parents of students entering middle school will get their computers at MISD Stadium in a drive-through fashion.

Parents are asked to arrive at the stadium at a time window corresponding to the student’s last name:

  • I-M (11 a.m. – 1 p.m.)

For students going into grades 3 through 5, pickups will be scheduled at their campuses between August 10 and 12. Each school will send parents additional information soon, according to the district.

Parents with students from pre-K to 2nd Grade can continue using the laptop they were issued in the spring and should contact studenthelp@mckinneyisd.net if they need one.

More information and the full schedule for pickups can be found on the McKinney ISD website.
