A Frisco student’s ‘Doodle’ may win her a $30K scholarship and a spot on Google’s homepage

A fifth-grader at Vaughn Elementary already has a $5,000 scholarship and some Google swag for her creative artwork.

As a finalist in the “Doodle for Google” competition, Frisco fifth-grader Sharon Sara could soon win a $30,000 scholarship and have her artwork featured on a webpage seen by millions of people every day.

The annual contest challenges school-aged children across the country to design art for the Google homepage — creative alterations to the company’s logo featured there are known as “Google doodles.” The contest’s theme this year is, “I show kindness by...”

Sara, a student at Vaughn Elementary, won the Texas competition thanks to her artwork, “Together As One.”

“I show kindness by sticking together with my friends in tough times,” Sara’s artist statement reads. “I drew people coming together and not thinking about the outside but being together because of their personality.”

After a period of voting on the 54 top finishers from across the country, Sara’s work was chosen as one of five national finalists.

A panel of Google executives will determine the winner. The winner’s artwork will be featured on Google’s homepage for a day. They will also receive a $30,000 scholarship, along with a $50,000 technology package for their school.

As a finalist, Sara will receive a $5,000 college scholarship, Google hardware and other Google prizes.
