DeSoto East Middle School has partnered with the nonprofit Serving with a Purpose to create an on-campus Parent Resource Center that will help students’ families with everything from resume-writing to student tutoring.
Two remodeled classrooms make up the Parent Resource Center, which offers tutoring, training and computer access to the families of students at East Middle School.
According to a news release from the school district, the resource center is an effort to help students and their parents with both educational and practical needs.
“East Middle School’s zoning district includes 15 apartment complexes, many housing financially challenged families,” according to the news release. Campus counselors saw an opportunity to bolster food and clothing programs with other support. “Further observation indicated a potential need for adult education or student tutoring, sometimes hampered by the lack of technology options at home.”
The Parent Resource Center provides training in resume writing, interview skills, financial literacy, parenting, Microsoft software, work-life balance and more.
Students can also earn credits by volunteering to assist at the center. COVID-19 protocols are in place to ensure student and family safety, the district said.
“I am really proud of the team here at East Middle School,” DeSoto ISD Superintendent D’Andre Weaver said in the news release. “Our educators think of the non-academic needs of our students and families, this resource center will mean the world to our families.”
East Middle School families in need of assistance should contact campus counselor Brittany Torres.
