Native American Students’ benefit powwow is March 11

The powwow includes a variety of dances and other cultural activities and serves as a scholarship fundraiser.

The University of Texas at Arlington’s Native American Student Association hosts the 27th annual Scholarship Benefit Powwow, a social, spiritual and educational day-long event March 11 at the Maverick Activity Center.

Admission is free and the event is from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.. Free parking is available. Arlington Mayor Jim Ross is among the guest speakers scheduled for 6 p.m.

The powwow brings together Native American relatives and friends to dance, sing, laugh and celebrate their heritages. The event offers non-Natives educational and cultural experiences.

Dance contests include men’s and women’s traditional and fancy, men’s grass and women’s jungle dress dances, and a tiny tots dance.

Participating vendors will be selling artworks and crafts, as well as Indian tacos and fry bread.

Pets are prohibited, but service dogs are welcome.
