Watch: Texas educators discuss student safety, school vouchers and the Legislature

Hear from the Dallas ISD superintendent and North Texas advocates about school shootings, vouchers and what’s at stake for education this session in the Texas Legislature.

Arming educators, school voucher-like efforts and teacher raises are among the dozens of proposals Texas lawmakers are hotly debating this year.

As the state reaches the midway point of its 88th legislative session, The Dallas Morning News’ Education Lab is hosting a live conversation with educators and advocates to unpack how decisions made in the Capitol could impact children, teachers and schools.

The virtual chat will be broadcast at 6 p.m. Wednesday on The NewsFacebook page.

Panelists include Dallas schools Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde; Monty Exter, the Association of Texas Professional Educators’ director of government relations; and HD Chambers, the Texas School Alliance’s executive director and a former schools superintendent.

Some bills aim to tackle the various challenges schools are facing — such as teacher quality, book bans and what students learn about history in class.

Other proposals would let families use taxpayer dollars on private school tuition, overhaul how community colleges are funded and prohibit diversity, equity and inclusion programs within state agencies.
