‘Friday Night Lights’ star Connie Britton will campaign for Allred in Dallas

The actress will appear at a bar and grill Tuesday as part of a “Women for Allred” initiative.

The star of Friday Night Lights and Nashville will campaign Tuesday in Dallas for U.S. Senate candidate Colin Allred.

Actress Connie Britton will appear with Allred and his wife, Aly Eber, at a phone banking event at 5:30 p.m. at Ozona Bar & Grill on Greenville Avenue. The public event is part of the candidate’s “Women for Allred” initiative and will also feature Lauren Miller, a Dallas woman who traveled to Colorado for an abortion after an ultrasound revealed one of her twins had serious abnormalities.

Allred, a Democrat, has placed abortion at the center of his campaign, highlighting cases of Texas women whose health was endangered when they were denied access to the procedure despite pregnancy complications.

Allred is challenging U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, who applauded the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade. At the only debate between the two, Cruz avoided addressing his position on exceptions for complications, instead saying the Supreme Court returned regulations to the control of the states. He objected to Allred blaming him for Texas’ near-total abortion ban, saying those policy decisions were up to state lawmakers.

Polls have show Allred, a Dallas congressman, making significant gains on Cruz, but most political forecasters give Cruz the edge two weeks ahead of the Nov. 5 election. A recent University of Houston survey this month showed Cruz leading Allred 50-46.

It is unclear whether Britton’s appearance can move polls. The actress played Tami Taylor, the spirited wife of head football coach Eric Taylor, in the critically acclaimed television series Friday Night Lights about a Texas football team.

Britton went on to play fading country music star Rayna Jaymes in Nashville, which chronicled the lives of country music singers.

This is not the actress’ first foray into politics. She joined a “White Women for Kamala” Zoom call in July, where she joked, “Karens for Kamala?”
