With election season now coming to an end, the city of Dallas is providing residents with an option to recycle their political yard signs now through Nov. 30.
Residents can drop off their corrugated plastic yard signs and metal stakes at any of the city’s three transfer stations during regular residential drop off times, according to a news release from the city.
Identifying the type of sign you have
Because political yard signs are made with a variety of materials, they will have different recycling requirements. The release says residents can pinpoint their sign type by how it looks and feels:
- Corrugated plastic signs feel sturdy and rigid.
- Cardboard-based signs have similar appearance but are less sturdy than corrugated plastic
- Plastic film signs feel like thick plastic bags
Recycling guidelines based on your sign type
Corrugated plastic signs have to be recycled at the transfer stations, the release said. These signs can’t go in the blue recycling carts because of their rigid structure, which can damage or jam the sorting equipment at the city’s recycling center, the city says.
Sanitation staff will properly bundle these signs as well as the metal stakes for separate processing, according to the release.
Plastic film signs can either be discarded or recycled at retail locations that accept plastics, such as grocery stores.
Residents can place the signs made of 100% cardboard in the blue recycling carts. However, cardboard signs wrapped in plastic can’t be recycled and would need to be repurposed or thrown away.
For residents who are unable to bring the recyclable signs to the transfer stations, they can bag them and put them in their gray cart for regular garbage collection.
