A new plaza has opened on Dallas’ Katy Trail to honor former Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, Friends of the Katy Trail announced Wednesday.
Called Staubach Pass, the two-sided plaza “enhances the natural beauty and functionality” of the area as well as the “safety of the Harvard street-level crossing over the trail,” the news release said.
Both sides of the plaza contain gray-blue pavers in acknowledgement of Staubach’s 11-season historic career with the Cowboys. Lighting and stone benches are also available for trail users, the release said.
Staubach Pass also features four stone pillars that each have a character word: “Perseverance, Service, Faith, and Family,” according to the release. These are words Staubach’s family believes are defining attributes of his life.
Staubach joined the Cowboys in 1969 as the team’s second major franchise quarterback, the release said. He was with Cowboys for his entire career and led them to the Super Bowl five times, four of which he played starting quarterback. Staubach was the first of four players to win both a Heisman Trophy and Super Bowl MVP.
A group of anonymous donors provided a $1 million donation to make the Staubach Pass possible, according to the release.
“The donors felt it was important to civic life that there be a physical acknowledgement of Mr. Staubach’s contribution to our community,” the release said. “Friends of the Katy Trail is so grateful for their generosity.
