A bike-building event provided life lessons and a cool new ride for elementary school students in Plano.
Golden State Foods Foundation held the event last Friday to benefit 50 students from Mendenhall Elementary School in Plano, the foundation stated in an email.
Students built their own bike with guidance from a volunteer mentor with the foundation. They also received helmets and bike locks.
The event was part of the foundation’s mission to help improve the quality of life for children and families in need.
But it was about more than getting a new bike.
Volunteers talked with students about life skills such as the value of hard work, goal setting, safety and healthy lifestyle habits, including physical activity.
Since Golden State Foods Foundation began in 2002, it has donated more than 8,200 bikes.
The event was organized by a Frisco-based division of Golden State Foods. Other participants included the Plano Fire Department and Richardson Bike Mart.
