Powerball grows to 4th-largest prize in game history at $1.09 billion

The Powerball jackpot grew to $1.09 billion ahead of Wednesday’s drawing.

The prize is the fourth largest in game history with an estimated cash value of about $527.3 million, according to Powerball. It’s also the ninth-largest U.S. lottery jackpot, placing it one ranking below the $1.128 billion Mega Millions jackpot won in New Jersey last week.

Wednesday’s drawing will be the 40th in the current sequence. The last jackpot payout, in which a player had all six matching numbers, was won Jan. 1.

Six tickets Monday had five matching numbers worth a $1 million prize, according to Powerball. They were purchased in Florida, Maryland, Minnesota, North Carolina and Virginia.

The overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.9 with the odds of winning the jackpot being 1 in 292.2 million, according to Powerball.
