DeSoto adds Place 7 council race to Feb. 2 special election

Candidates for the council seat and mayor have until Wednesday to file to run for the office.

The DeSoto City Council has added the Place 7 city council position to the upcoming special election on Feb. 2 to select a new mayor after Curtistene McCowan’s death last month.

McCowan passed away Oct. 28 after being diagnosed with lung cancer. She had served as mayor since 2016. Mayor Pro Tem and Place 7 City Council Member Kenzie Moore III has fulfilled the duties of the late mayor but will resign from his council position after announcing he would run for mayor.

By law, his seat as Place 7 council member must be vacated until the seat is filled.

The special election was approved under at the council’s Nov. 17 meeting. The council voted at their last meeting 4-2 to include the Place 7 council position in the same Feb. 2 special election.

Candidates for either office have until Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 5 p.m. to file their applications. Those interested in applying can search the city’s site or contact City Secretary Kisha Morris-Perkins at 972-230-9646 or by email.

Early voting will begin on Wednesday, Jan. 20 2021 and continue through Friday, Jan. 29, 2021.
