West, who has lived in the district for 13 years, will step in for Mayor Eric Johnson when he’s absent.

Dallas City Council member Chad West, who won his second term last month, has been named mayor pro tem.

West, who represents District 1, received the title at the Dallas City Council’s June 14 swearing-in ceremony. As mayor pro tem, West will step in for Mayor Eric Johnson when he is absent.

West, a lawyer and small business owner, has represented District 1 for two years. The district, southwest of downtown, includes the Bishop Arts District and north and west Oak Cliff. District 1 stretches from Interstate 30 on the north to West Illinois Avenue on the south and from the city of Cockrell Hill on the west to Interstate 35E on the east. The heart of the district is the 75208 ZIP code.

He won reelection in May after building his campaign on a track record of embracing growth in the district while pushing for protections to keep Oak Cliff’s history and culture intact.

“We’ve had a wild two years with COVID and protests and a lot of challenges in public safety, the ice storm and tornadoes,” West, 44, said in April. “Despite all those challenges, we got a lot of things started, and we still have a lot of work to do.”
